Using your Word Family Cards, review ALL the short A, short O, short I and short U Word Families:

SAY THIS TO YOUR CHILD

"Today we're going to build our first real words."

"We'll use word families and letter cards to make lots of new words."

LET’S READ THE WORD FAMILIES

• Show your child each card from Word Family Short E.

• Have your child use their finger to touch each letter sound, saying each sound then blending them together.

• Parctice with all Word Family Cards in short E set.

• Review several times so your child is confident with the Word Family short E set.

BUILD A WORD

• Using the letter cards, place one consonant Letter Card in front of the Word Family Card.

• Have your child touch and say the letter sounds then blend the sounds into the word.

• Repeat each word to blend the sounds smoothly together to read the word.

Change only first letter and keep the word family card when building new words.

READING TIPS

✓ Say each sound in the word first

✓ Blend whole word smoothly

ARTICULATION REMINDER

❌ buh +ed = buh-ed

✅ b+ ed = bed

Keep consonant sounds short and crisp.

Avoid adding an extra “uh” sound.

A quick sound is easier to blend.

Praise careful listening.

PARENT TIP

If your child gets stuck, read the word family sound first, then add the beginning sound.
